Auto Accident Statistics

Every year, numerous people are seriously injured in traffic accidents all across the country.

The Fatality Analysis Reporting System, as furnished by the National Highway Safety Administration reports:

  • 37,248 fatal crashes nationwide in 2007
  • 19.96 fatalities per 100,000 licensed drivers in 2007, the lowest percentage rate recorded since data beginning in 1994
  • The majority of deaths in traffic accidents involved drivers of motor vehicles (63%), 28% of passengers succumbed to death as a result of accidents, and the remaining 9% includes motorcyclists, bicycle riders, and pedestrians

According to the state of New Jersey's Department of Transportation, there were 258,968 total crashes in 2008, 65,267 which resulted in injury and 193,145 that resulted only in property damage. Regardless of whether or not a person is injured, auto accidents can greatly impact a person's well-being (if not physically, then financially).

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were a total of 590 traffic fatalities in 2008 in the state of New Jersey, 515 of which took place in urban settings. The 590 fatalities marks an 18.5% decrease from the previous year, in which 724 traffic fatalities took place. Though the number of fatalities associated with auto accidents in the state of New Jersey is on the decline, too many unfortunate people are affected by auto accident wrongful death occurrences.

The Office of the Attorney General for the state of New Jersey's Department of Law & Public Safety warns drivers that the following distractions can greatly impair judgment while on the road:

  • Talking on a cell phone/text messaging with a cell phone
  • Tuning a radio or CD player, or inputting coordinates on a GPS system
  • Talking to passengers, tending to children in the backseat, or being distracted by a pet that is being transported
  • Eating, drinking, or attempting other activities, such as applying makeup, that can divert one's eyes away from the road and lead to inattention
